Oil lamp shades when used with proper lamps can enhance the beauty of a room like no other light fixture. You cannot compare the romantic and warm light emitted by a beautiful rose-colored shade to that produced by a light bulb. However, oil lamp shades can sometimes be very expensive and will appeal more to the consumer if they can be used as more than just a decoration piece. All oil lamps can serve the purpose of emergency lighting but there are certain shades that can add further functionality to a lamp. One of these shades is the student lamp shade.
What is a student shade or rather what does it look like? At the time of their invention, student shades were made to focus light downwards. Hence, they had a very broad base. As we move up the shade it starts to get narrower and finishes off with a cylindrical chimney at the top which sometimes flares outwards. Think of an open-top-dome with a circular pool (open on both sides) on the top and you will have a better idea of what I am talking about.
If you haven't used an oil lamp before then you might be wondering - Why is there a chimney at the top of the shade? The chimney serves as an outlet for the soot and smoke produced by the flare. Nowadays, most of the shades are made to be used with modern electric lamps. Hence, when making the purchase it is imperative that you check that the shade has an open chimney.
Other things to consider before buying a student shade:
The mood you want to create: If you want to create a romantic mood in your bedroom then a cranberry stained shade is the best option but if you want to use the lamp on your study table then go for a clear glass or opal shade.
The measurements: If you go out to buy tires for your car would you do so without looking at the make and the size of your previous tires? Well, it is definitely not a good idea. Similarly, it is not a good idea to buy an oil lamp shade without looking at the make and size or your lamp.
That which breaks: Oil lamp shades are fragile and can break easily. Hence, it is a good idea to order a replacement with your original shade to save on the shipping costs.
An oil lamp will more than just brighten your room. It will lift your spirits and provide a warm glow to your room. So, go ahead and impress your friends!
